Warangal Fort Shiva Temples

The Warangal Fort contains the remains of the great Svayambhu Shiva temple built by the Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva in the 13th century. The fort's four elaborately carved ornamental gateways (toranas) survive and are now a symbol of Telangana state.

The carved toranas (gateways) are masterpieces of Kakatiya stone carving — festooned with mythological carvings, scrolling vines, and royal imagery. The original temple hall has collapsed, but the visual impact of these massive decorated gateways standing in isolation is extraordinary.
