The Vitthala Temple is the most extravagant architectural showpiece of Hampi. It was built in the 15th century during the rule of Devaraya II and significantly expanded by Krishnadevaraya. It is dedicated to Vitthala, a form of Lord Vishnu.
The temple is famous for its iconic Stone Chariot (Ratha), which is featured on the new ₹50 Indian currency note. The chariot is actually a shrine originally containing an image of Garuda.
Another marvel of the temple is its 'musical pillars' in the Maha Mandapa. The 56 stone pillars produce musical notes when struck, showcasing the extraordinary acoustic engineering of the Vijayanagara artisans.
