Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Rajgir

Vishwa Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda) at Rajgir sits atop the Ratnagiri Hill in Rajgir — one of the most historically significant cities in India, where the Buddha spent many rainy seasons and gave some of his most important teachings. Rajgir was also the capital of the Magadha Empire and a sacred site for Jains (associated with Mahavira).

Built in 1969 CE by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan-Myohoji, the white marble stupa is accessible by a ropeway that offers sweeping views of the valley. Four golden Buddha statues on the four sides represent the four stages of Buddha's life. The site is part of a larger Buddhist circuit in Bihar and is visited by pilgrims from across Asia. The ancient Venuvan (Bamboo Grove) — gifted to the Buddha by King Bimbisara — is located nearby.
