The Vishnupad Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu sites, located along the Phalgu River. It is built around a footprint (pad) believed to be that of Lord Vishnu, imprinted on solid rock (Dharmasila).

The current octagonal temple structure, with a 30-meter high shikhara, was built by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1787. Gaya is highly revered for performing Pind Daan rituals for ancestors, and the Vishnupad Temple is the center of these activities.
