The Virupaksha Temple at Pattadakal is the largest and most sophisticated of the monuments at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pattadakal. Built in the 8th century by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate her husband King Vikramaditya II's victory over the Pallavas, it was originally called the Lokeshwara Temple.
The temple is a masterpiece of early Chalukyan architecture, built in the Dravidian style. Its intricate carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. The grand structure served as the inspiration for the Kailasanathar Temple at Ellora.
