The Virupaksha Temple is located in Hampi in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka. It is part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva.
The temple was built by Lakkana Dandesha, a chieftain under the ruler Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire. While Hampi's many temples lay in ruins following the fall of the empire, the Virupaksha temple has remained an uninterrupted centre of worship for centuries.
The temple features a 50-metre high eastern gopuram, pillared halls, and an interesting pinhole camera effect where an inverted image of the main tower falls on an inner wall.
