Vadakkunnathan Temple

The Vadakkunnathan Temple is a classic example of traditional Kerala architecture with its monumental gopurams and sprawling Koothambalam (temple theatre). Dedicated to Shiva, it is believed to be the first temple built by the sage Parashurama.

The temple is famous for the Thrissur Pooram, one of the most spectacular temple festivals in India, featuring massive processions of caparisoned elephants and elaborate percussion ensembles (Panchavadyam) held in the vast maidan outside.
