About
The Udayagiri Caves are a group of 20 rock-cut caves and shrines carved into a sandstone hill during the Gupta dynasty. They house some of the earliest surviving Hindu imagery in India.
The centrepiece is a colossal bas-relief of the Varaha avatar of Vishnu rescuing the Earth goddess from the primordial ocean — one of the greatest masterpieces of ancient Indian sculpture. The site also contains a dedicatory inscription from the reign of Chandragupta II (circa 401 CE).
