Perched atop the massive Rockfort, a 83-meter outcrop of gneiss rock, the Ucchi Pillayar Temple (Vinayaka/Ganesha) is reached by 437 steps cut into the rock face. The panoramic view of the city and the Kaveri river from the summit is breathtaking.

The cave temples at the base of the fort were carved by the Pallavas in the 7th-8th century CE and include the Thayumanaswami (Shiva) temple. The Rockfort is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Tamil Nadu.
