Tripura Sundari Temple, affectionately called Matabari, is one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas established in 1501 CE by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya. Built on a hillock shaped like a tortoise (Kurma Pitha), the single-domed Bengal-roof style shrine houses a black stone idol of Soroshi / Tripura Sundari. The holy Kalyani tank behind the temple is inhabited by sacred giant tortoises.
