About
The Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is one of the six Arupadai Veedu (abodes of Murugan) and is believed to be the oldest. Carved directly into the granite hill, it is a remarkable rock-cut cave temple expanded over many centuries.
The cave portion dates to Pandya antiquity while later Nayaka additions created more elaborate mandapas and gopurams. The multiple sections of this temple — one for each god — showcase the syncretic nature of South Indian worship, housing shrines for Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, and Murugan together.
