The Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Thanesar (Kurukshetra) is one of the oldest and most sacred Shiva temples in North India, intimately connected with the Mahabharata. According to tradition, the Pandavas prayed here before the battle of Kurukshetra. The city of Thanesar (Sthaneshvara) derives its name from this shrine.
The sacred tank of Brahmasarovar nearby is mentioned in ancient texts as a place where Brahma himself performed the first yajna. The town was the capital of the Pushyabhuti dynasty and was visited by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang in the 7th century CE.
