About
The Srirangapatna Ranganathaswamy Temple is a historic Vaishnava temple on the island of Srirangapatna. Built by the Ganga kings in 894 CE, it gives the island its name and is one of three famous 'Srirangam' temples in South India.
The temple was protected and expanded by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan despite being Muslim rulers. Tipu Sultan's respect for this temple is often cited as evidence of his religious pluralism. The temple is beautifully situated amidst the historic fort ruins of Srirangapatna.
