The Sri Krishna Matha in Udupi is one of the most important pilgrimage centers of India, founded by the great philosopher-saint Madhvacharya (Ananda Tirtha) in the 13th century. He installed the idol of Lord Krishna and established eight monasteries (Ashtamathas) to manage the temple in rotation.
The temple is famous for the 'Kanakana Kindi' — a small window with nine holes through which the legend says Bhakta Kanakadasa, denied entry due to his low caste, was able to have a vision of the deity. The idol moves daily to face him.
