The Sas Bahu Temples atop Gwalior Fort were built in 1093 CE by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. The name 'Sahastrabahu' (thousand-armed Vishnu) was corrupted over time to 'Sas Bahu' (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law).
The larger of the two temples is a four-storey structure with an ornate shikhara; the smaller is a reduced replica. The temples are renowned for their intricate carvings, especially the pierced stone screens and bracket figures.
