Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple

Sabarimala is a renowned hill shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappan, set amidst the dense forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. It is the site of one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, attracting an estimated 40-50 million devotees during the Makalavilakku season.

Pilgrims observe 41 days of strict ascetic practices (vratham) before undertaking the forest trek. The temple's unique traditions emphasize egalitarianism — all pilgrims wear black/blue clothes, carry an Irumudi (sacred bundle), and address each other simply as 'Swami'.
