About
The Ramanathaswamy Temple on Rameswaram Island is one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is believed to be where Rama worshipped Shiva to expiate the sin of killing Ravana.
The temple is renowned for its extraordinary corridors — the longest in any Hindu temple. The outer prakara corridor stretches approximately 197 metres in length, lined by 1,212 massive granite pillars. The temple also contains 22 sacred theerthams (water tanks) in which pilgrims bathe ritually.
The inner sanctum houses two main Shiva lingas: Ramalingam (consecrated by Rama) and Vishwalingam (brought by Hanuman from Kashi).
