About
The Omkareshwar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river, shaped like the Hindu symbol 'Om'.
The temple has a grand Sabha Mandap (assembly hall) standing on about 60 huge brown stone pillars intricately carved with a broad band of satyr-like figures. The temple consists of a shrine with a tall shikhara over the sanctum.
Pilgrims perform parikrama (circumambulation) around the entire island, a highly meritorious act that covers a path of around 7-8 km dotted with numerous other temples and ruins.
