The Nageshwarnath Temple is one of the most ancient temples in Ayodhya, said to have been established by Kush, the son of Lord Rama. According to legend, a Naga princess fell in love with Kush and requested a Shiva temple be built where she could meet him.
The temple survived the destructive period of Aurangzeb's rule when many Ayodhya temples were demolished. It is the only temple in Ayodhya dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the few ancient structures still remaining in the sacred town.
