Mundeshwari Devi Temple

The Mundeshwari Devi Temple in the Kaimur hills is widely regarded by the Archaeological Survey of India as one of the oldest functional Hindu temples in the world, with inscriptions dated to 108 CE. Dedicated jointly to Shiva and Shakti, its sanctum houses a unique four-faced octagonal Shivalingam.

Perched on a hilltop at 608 feet elevation, the octagonal structure shows an advanced structural understanding. Remarkably, despite its extraordinary antiquity, the temple continues as an active place of worship, connecting two millennia of unbroken devotion.
