Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple, Shahpur Kandi

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple at Shahpur Kandi, near Pathankot, is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva set dramatically on the banks of the Ravi River gorge. The main shrine is a natural cave featuring a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva linga that emerges from the ground without any human carving — a feature considered especially sacred in Shaiva tradition.

The site is surrounded by dense forests and the scenic Ravi gorge, giving it a serene and remote atmosphere. It is one of the most significant Shaiva pilgrimage sites in Punjab and draws devotees from across the region, particularly during Mahashivaratri and Sawan (the holy month of Shiva). The setting near the historic Shahpur Kandi Fort and dam adds to its historical significance.
