The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is one of the finest examples of Solanki (Chaulukya) architecture in western India, built around 1026 CE under King Bhimdev I. Dedicated to Surya, the temple is designed so that the rising sun illuminates the sanctum's golden image during the equinoxes.
The complex consists of three parts: the shrine with a shikhara, a pillared assembly hall (sabha mandapa), and a large stepped tank (Surya Kund) with 108 miniature shrines on its terraced steps — a masterpiece of geometric stepped-well architecture.
The annual Uttarardh Mahotsav classical dance festival transforms the temple into a spectacular performance backdrop.
