The Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most magnificent and important temples in India, attracting over 15,000 visitors daily. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (a form of Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva), its famous 14 multi-coloured gopurams soar up to 52 meters above the city of Madurai.
The temple complex covers 6 hectares and contains a golden lotus tank, numerous shrines, and over 33,000 sculptures. It was largely expanded by the Nayaka kings in the 16th-17th centuries and remains one of the defining monuments of Dravidian civilization.
