The Mahalaxmi Temple (or Ambabai Temple) in Kolhapur is one of the Shakti Peethas and one of the most venerated shrines of the goddess Mahalakshmi in India. The goddess here is considered svayambhu (self-manifested).
The temple dates back to at least the 7th century CE and was built in the Chalukyan style of architecture. The idol of Mahalakshmi is an impressive 40-kg image adorned with magnificent jewelry, and the sanctum is oriented so that sunlight falls directly on the idol during Kiranotsav — three times a year at sunset.
The temple is a significant pilgrimage destination and is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas. The Kolhapur prasad (temple food) is considered especially sacred.
