The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is unique as the only south-facing (Dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga, said to be swayambhu (self-manifested). It is located in the ancient city of Ujjain, one of the seven sacred Hindu cities.
The temple is famous for the Bhasma Aarti, where the deity is anointed with ashes from cremation grounds, symbolizing Shiva as the lord of time and death. This aarti takes place at dawn and is one of the most powerful ritual experiences in India.
