The Mahadeva Temple at Itagi (1112 CE) is hailed by its own dedicatory inscription as 'Devalaya Chakravarti' — Emperor among Temples — and is widely considered the crowning masterpiece of Western Chalukya of Kalyani architecture. Commissioned by a feudal chieftain named Mahadeva under King Vikramaditya VI, the temple features a dramatically ornamented navaranga (nine-square hall), 64 doorways carved with ascending bands of deities, and a superb trikuta (triple sanctum) plan.
