Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla

Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla is the oldest surviving temple in Goa and one of the most remarkable — not just in the state but in India. Built in the 12th century CE by the Kadamba dynasty, it is a perfectly preserved example of the Kadamba-Hoysala architectural style, constructed from local black basalt stone.

The temple is located deep within the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary near the Western Ghats, which protected it from the destruction that befell almost all other Goan temples during the Portuguese Inquisition (16th century). As a result, it stands as a pristine, atmospheric ruin in a forested setting — far removed from the rebuilt, Indo-Portuguese style temples of coastal Goa. The sanctum houses a Shiva linga, and the exterior features carved friezes of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in Goa's pre-colonial heritage.
