Lingaraja Temple

The Lingaraja Temple is the largest temple in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to Harihara — a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu. Constructed in the 11th century CE under the Somavamshi dynasty, it represents the apex of Kalinga (Odishan) architectural tradition.

The temple complex covers about 250,000 square feet with over 150 subsidiary shrines. The main deul (sanctuary tower) rises 55 metres. The outer walls are covered in intricate carvings depicting deities, apsaras, and daily life.

The presiding deity, Swayambhu Linga, is housed in the sanctuary and partially immersed in water that flows from within. The temple draws thousands of devotees especially during the Shivratri festival. Non-Hindus may view the temple from an elevated platform outside.
