Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, Mathura

The Krishna Janmabhoomi complex in Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The site includes the Keshava Deo Temple and the Garbha Griha (prison cell), the spot where Krishna is believed to have been born to Devaki and Vasudeva while they were imprisoned by the demon king Kansa.

The current complex was built in 1965. It is one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, drawing millions of devotees annually, especially during Janmashtami, the festival celebrating Krishna's birth.

The complex has a tumultuous history — it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over centuries. A 17th-century mosque (Shahi Eidgah) stands immediately adjacent to the temple, and the two sites share a wall.
