About
The Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Surya, the solar deity. Built in 1250 CE under King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, it is one of the finest examples of Kalinga architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The temple was conceived as a colossal stone chariot with 24 intricately carved wheels pulled by seven horses, representing the passage of the sun across the sky. Each wheel serves as a sundial capable of telling time to the minute.
The original sanctuary tower — known as the Black Pagoda to European sailors — partially collapsed, but the audience hall (Jagamohana) and dance hall (Nata Mandira) survive impressively. The Konark Dance Festival, held every December, celebrates classical Odissi dance against this spectacular backdrop.
