About
The Katarmal Sun Temple is a group of 45 small shrines surrounding a central Surya (Sun god) temple, built in the 9th century CE by the Katyuri kings. It is one of the very few dedicated Sun temples in the entire Himalayan region and serves as a rare counterpart to the more famous Konark and Modhera.
The main deity, Burhadita (Elder Sun), was stolen in 1975 and is now in the National Museum, Delhi. The ASI has since secured the remaining sculptures in situ.
