Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Tenkasi

The Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Tenkasi is known as the 'South Kashi' because, like the Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has both a Shiva lingam and a Ganga river (here represented by the Chittar river).

Built by the Pandya kings, the temple is remarkable for its 180-foot tall gopuram, one of the tallest in this region. The temple's sculptures are considered superb examples of late Pandya artistic expression.
