About
The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple at Khajuraho is the largest and most elaborate of the Khajuraho group of monuments and the supreme achievement of the Chandela dynasty. Built around 1025–1050 CE, the temple soars to 30 metres in a dramatic cluster of 84 subsidiary spires evoking the Himalayan peak of Mount Meru.
The temple's fame rests on its extraordinary erotic sculptures (mithuna figures) that occupy one-tenth of the exterior decoration — the remaining nine-tenths depicts celestial beings, warriors, and Puranic narratives.
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kandariya is the centrepiece of the Western Group, one of the most photographed temples in India.
