The Kamakshi Amman Temple is one of the three great Shakti shrines of Tamil Nadu, alongside Meenakshi (Madurai) and Akilandeswari (Thiruvanaikaval). The goddess Kamakshi represents pure love and she presides over Kanchipuram as its divine sovereign.
The temple was the center of Advaita philosopher Adi Shankaracharya's activities — he is said to have pacified the fierce form of the goddess here by installing a Sri Chakra yantra, transforming her from a destructive to a benevolent form. The goddess is worshipped in a seated, meditative posture.
