The Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is one of the three most sacred Shakti Pithas in South India and the seat of the goddess Kamakshi. Kanchipuram is one of the seven moksha-giving cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism.
The main sanctum houses the golden image of Kamakshi seated in padmasana, holding a parrot and a sugarcane bow — a posture unique among Shakta temples. Adi Shankaracharya is credited with establishing the Srichakra in the sanctum and founding it as a centre of Sri Vidya tantra worship.
The temple is visited by millions of pilgrims annually. The Brahmotsavam and Navarathri festivals draw especially large crowds.
