Hoysaleswara Temple

The Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu is a 12th-century Shaiva temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and one of the most celebrated examples of Hoysala architecture. Built around 1121 CE under the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana, the temple was never completed but remains a pinnacle of Indian medieval stone craftsmanship.

The twin-shrine plan sits on a star-shaped (stellate) platform. Every centimetre of the outer walls is covered in horizontal friezes: elephants, horses, scrolling foliage, swans, scenes from the Puranas, and deity figures — all carved in soft green schist that enables extraordinary detail.

The sculptures include some of the finest Hoysala iconography: an exceptional Nataraja panel, Durga slaying Mahishasura, and a powerful Lakulisha figure.
