The Hanuman Garhi is the most prominent temple in the busy heart of Ayodhya, dedicated to Lord Hanuman who is worshipped here as the protector of Ram's birthplace. Set atop a hillock, it is reached by 76 steep steps.
Legend holds that Hanuman lives in a cave beneath this temple, eternally guarding the city of Rama. The temple courtyard affords fine views over the sacred city. It is virtually mandatory for all pilgrims to visit Hanuman Garhi before proceeding to the Ram Janmabhoomi.
