Gaurisagar Temple Complex

Gaurisagar Temple Complex, built between 1715 and 1719 CE by Queen Phuleswari Devi (a powerful queen of the Ahom Kingdom), sits on the banks of the Gaurisagar tank — an enormous artificial reservoir dug by the queen herself. The complex consists of three temples: Devi Dol (dedicated to Durga), Shiva Dol, and Vishnu Dol.

The temples follow the distinctive Ahom style: tall, beehive-shaped sikharas that taper gradually to a point, built from local brick. The Devi Dol, dedicated to the Goddess, is particularly significant as it was built and consecrated by a queen — a rare act of female royal patronage in the Ahom era. The Gaurisagar area is a few kilometres from the more famous Sibasagar tank complex and together they represent the zenith of Ahom royal temple patronage.
