Gangotri Temple

The Gangotri Temple is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage shrines of Uttarakhand, dedicated to Goddess Ganga at the origin of the sacred river. The present white granite temple was built in the early 18th century by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa. It sits at 3,100 metres altitude amid breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

The actual source of the Ganga, the Gangotri Glacier (Gomukh), is 19 km further up the valley. The temple is open only from Akshaya Tritiya to Diwali each year.
