About

The Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour. They consist of a main cave with magnificent rock-cut sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva, most notably the colossal three-headed Trimurti Sadashiva, 6 metres tall.

Dating to the 5th–8th centuries CE, the caves represent a high point of Shaiva iconography. The monumental scale and compositional sophistication of the carvings make it one of the finest examples of Gupta-period rock-cut temple architecture.
