About
The Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas (five elemental abodes of Shiva), representing Earth (Prithvi). The sacred lingam here — called Prithvi Lingam — is made of sand and cannot be anointed with water, only with flowers.
The temple complex covers 40 acres and features a 58-meter tall 11-storied gopuram built by Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara empire. The complex also contains a 3,500-year-old mango tree that is said to bear four types of mangoes corresponding to the four Vedas.
