The Devgarh Temples in Lalitpur contain one of India's earliest and most important surviving free-standing temples — the Dashavatara (Ten Avatars of Vishnu) Temple, built in the late Gupta period around the 5th-6th century CE.
The Dashavatara Temple is famous for its three large relief panels on three sides of its garbhagriha: Gajendra Moksha (Vishnu rescuing an elephant), Nara-Narayana, and the Cosmic Sleep of Vishnu (Anantashayana). These are considered masterpieces of Gupta art.
