The Chaturbhuj Temple at Orchha is one of the largest and most spectacular Vishnu temples in Central India. Built by Queen Ganesh Kunwari in 1558-1627 CE for the idol of Ram that she had personally brought from Ayodhya, the temple rises to an extraordinary height blending temple and palace architecture.
The idol of Ram was never installed in the Chaturbhuj Temple because it was first placed temporarily in the palace (now known as Ram Raja Temple), and the deity refused to move. The Chaturbhuj Temple remains an empty but breathtaking shell that visitors can climb.
