The Chamundeshwari Temple atop Chamundi Hills is the most important temple in Mysuru, and the tutelary deity of the Wadiyar kings of the Kingdom of Mysore. Dedicated to the fierce Goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga), the temple's seven-story gopuram soars 40 meters above the hilltop.

The hill climb of 1,008 steps is a popular pilgrimage, with a massive Nandi bull statue carved from a single rock about two-thirds of the way up. The goddess is especially worshipped during the grand Dasara festival.
