The Chamunda Mataji Temple perches on the rocky cliffs at the edge of the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. Dedicated to the fierce Goddess Chamunda, it was established by the Rathore rulers as their tutelary deity shrine when they founded Jodhpur in the 15th century.
The idol of Chamunda was brought from the former Rathore capital of Mandore by Rao Jodha when he built the new fort in 1460 CE. The temple commands spectacular views over the blue city of Jodhpur and the Thar Desert horizon.
