Brahma Sarovar Temple Complex

Brahma Sarovar at Kurukshetra is one of the holiest tanks in Hinduism, believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself. Kurukshetra — the battlefield of the Mahabharata where Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna — is dotted with temples and sacred sites, but Brahma Sarovar and the adjacent Sannihit Sarovar are the most sacred. A solar eclipse bath here is believed to be equivalent to a thousand Ashwamedha Yagnas.

The sarovar (tank) is enormous — stretching over 3.5 km in circumference — and is surrounded by numerous temples, ghats, and dharmashalas. The Sarveshwar Mahadev Temple at the centre of the tank on an island, and the Lakshminarayan Temple on the banks, are among the key shrines. During the solar eclipse and during Gita Jayanti, millions of pilgrims converge here for ritual bathing.
