The Bhojeshwar Temple in Bhojpur was commissioned by the great Paramara king Bhoja (r. 1010–1055 CE) and is one of the most ambitious temple projects ever attempted in India — it was never completed. Yet even its unfinished form is awe-inspiring.
It houses one of the world's largest monolithic Shiva lingams — 7.5 feet high and 17.8 feet in circumference. Construction ramps of earth used by medieval masons are still visible on the hillside, providing rare archaeological evidence of ancient building techniques.
