About
The Bhimashankar Temple is a Jyotirlinga shrine located near Pune, Maharashtra. It is situated in the Sahyadri hills amidst a dense forest, which is also a wildlife sanctuary famous for the Indian Giant Squirrel. The temple marks the source of the Bhima River.
The current structure dates back to the 18th century and is built in the Nagara style of architecture, blending old and new structural styles. It was built largely by the Maratha minister Nana Phadnavis.
The temple boasts an exquisite shikhara built of dark stone. The sanctum is at a lower level, and devotees have to descend steps to reach it.
