Bateshwar Hindu Temples

The Bateshwar Temples form a staggering complex of nearly 200 sandstone temples scattered across the forested hills of Morena. Built between the 8th and 10th centuries by the Gurjara-Pratiharas, they are mostly dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu.

For centuries, the complex lay in absolute ruin, damaged by earthquakes and neglect, looking like heaps of rubble. In the 2000s, the ASI—under KK Muhammed—undertook a massive and brilliant restoration project to reconstruct these temples block by block.
