Basaralu Mallikarjuna Temple (1234 CE) is a classic Hoysala Trikuta stone temple in Mandya district, dedicated to Mallikarjuna (Shiva). Considered one of the most refined Hoysala temples outside Belur and Halebidu, notable for its exquisitely detailed multi-tiered sculptural program.
The exterior walls carry the standard Hoysala band sequence — elephants, horses, scrolling foliage, figures, geese, and divinities. Individual figures of apsaras, Shaiva guardians, and Puranic scenes are superb. The star-shaped vimana creates dramatic shadow patterns throughout the day.
